For some reason this reminded me of turning video camera on the screen displaying what it is recording. I recall a teacher in elementary school scolding us for doing it, and saying that it would hurt the camera.

I was scolded for that as a kid too. I was told that it was bad for the television. There was something really intriguing about that image as a child though and even now. It's an image that I think of often and it reminds me of watching the end of a cigarette burn for some reason. I'm not sure why, but those two images are stored in similar parts of my brain.
