This has got a little bit of a different vibe, and I wouldn't say that I've been obsessed with it...but I had a friend from Portugal introduce me to Fado, which came about from "Saudade and the melancholy of our people". I don't really understand the words, but I love that she was willing to share that part of her culture with me. It's caused me to start researching Portuguese history (especially post WWII), so I thought I'd share! Also, Saudade is a really interesting word that apparently has no direct English translation. From Wikipedia: Anyway, here it is: Also, I realize I lack the proper cultural background to truly appreciate this music, but it's a cool glimpse into a culture I had never considered before.Saudade is a word in Portuguese and Galician that has no direct translation in English. It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing may never return.

I've been listening to Postal Service a lot this week. Also, I discovered Kingsbury Manx a band from Chapel Hill: I'm really digging their sound. One of the guys in the band owns my favorite record store in town.

Painted Zeros have taken up a big chunk of my listening time lately. I also got around to listening to the new Lupe Fiasco and the song Mural is mind-blowing. Great album, probably the best thing he's done since The Cool.
Spencer Davis Group- Gimme Some Lovin Steve Winwood is far more than his eighties output, Higher Love and Back in the High Life, which I also like for what it is He was also in a super group with Eric Clapton Can't Find My Way Home- Blind Faith
Apparently Beethoven wrote some tunes for Mandolin. They're WoO (without opus number), but they're totally charming little gems. I found out about them while wandering around on imslp.org the other day.
