If you want a concealed carry weapon permit here in MI, they ask you why you want one when you file the permit. "Personal protection" is considered a good enough reason. I think they only ask for the same reason that they used to ask if you packed your own bags at the airport; they don't really give a shit, but need to cover their ass. As far as I know the only way you can be turned down (assuming you passed the safety class) is if you have been convicted of certain felonies (domestic violence, for example) or have a history of mental illness. Reasonable, IMO. We have a population of ~8 or 9 million and there are over 800,000 CCW permits issued. Lots of gun toting folks here.
