Son of a BITCH.
Okay.
So I don't know if anyone here even knows who Monty Oum is, but the guy was a legend to me. I remember watching Haloid 7 years ago. To give you perspective, Monty was 26 when he created this entire thing by himself:
It was the first time I'd ever seen anything like it, created by one person. There are entire teams of people that have not achieved as much as Monty did making one video.
And he only got better, later making Dead Fantasy:
and literally one of my favorite fight-scenes in anything ever, for Red vs. Blue:
As well as working on the following seasons of RvB.
After all that (and creating the combat system for Afro Samurai, which would later inspire Metal Gear Rising), Monty Oum went on to work on RWBY. RWBY was Monty's baby, and you could tell in every detail of the show. My sister and I watched every episode that came out, and the man's craft improved between every episode.
Monty's stuff was cheesy, it was over the top, and you could see the seams in his work clearly a hell of a lot of the time. But goddamn was he an inspiration to me. The man's drive and creative passion could be seen in every single thing he worked on. When I think of a fight scene in my head when I'm writing a Hubskina chapter, I think, "man, I wish Monty would animate this shit," and write it out like that. I used three songs from RWBY in Hubskina. He inspired me in believing that I could create worlds and characters by myself, just like he could. He gave me the drive to actually start creating things all of those years ago. To hear that he's passed away is painful. I didn't realize it could hurt this much when someone you don't even know dies.
So, yeah.
- As for honoring Monty, we will do that in our own way. In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to.
If you can, make something today, Hubski.
Never knew Monty from his work, but for a long time I was fan of the RT Podcast. They mentioned him several times, always with love and admiration. Seemed like a really genuine, kind guy. I'll definitely be tuning in to the next podcast (#309) to see what they say. 33 years old man, damn.
