Made with the help of mk and insomniasexx. It's been a great year of content! What was your favourite post?
The Jean Paul Sartre Cookbook always and forever. The Great Books List has created an unreasonably long backlog and I swear if I ever finish Team of Rivals I'll get around to reading something off of that list or the other books lists that have been floated around here. Out of things not on this list I'm going to shamelessy plug: the discussion from my post about Duke University Porn Star from earlier in 2014. The first "Pubski" should be somewhere on the best of 2014, I think.
It's a lot to take in. The book centers around Lincoln and his cabinet and a bunch of other players in the political scene in the decades leading up to and including the civil war, and starts off with the childhood and early political careers of many people before even reaching the Presidency. It can be a slog at times, but I'm enjoying it and have learned a tremendous amount of information about these politicians as people and about the political landscape leading up to the Civil War. Haven't even reached Lincoln's presidency or the war yet.
Haha, I know what's it about, I've read it. As with all of Kearns Goodwin's books, there's tons and tons of information thrown at you. I love it but it turns some people off. The beginning of that one was a bit slow, as you say. To be followed up after a healthy amount of time with this.
Ah, my apologies. I don't know of anyone in real world space that has read it, hence the rundown. Seward and Stanton are the most interesting people outside of Lincoln so I will have to try and pick that up after this. I also appreciate the pictures and diagrams in Team of Rivals a lot.
This is great, thanks guys. I am kinda disappointed the thing I submitted about Ron Suskind didn't make it on there -- I'd short list that as one of the best articles I've ever read on the internet, period. But such is life!
Yeah flagamuffin, that really was a great read, I actually think I may have cried during it. I just gave it another badge in honor of veen's comment. Also, veen GREAT WORK compiling all of this. I know such an endeavor is not an easy one. mk and insom, great work on creating it. Good stuff, all the way around.
Yeah, there seem to be notification bugs of late. I missed a pM from tdog recently too. I promise that once the rewrite is done we will be back to our normal and quick response rates to such things.
I would like to give an honorable mention to Complexity's comment on Upworthy-type sites. Because holy shit.
Wow! I make it in for angry ranting! I... I do a lot of that lately, huh? This was a year of being fucking done with everything and everyone shitty, and I'm glad it's over and hope everyone can put it up there are 'Decade's Shittiest Year So Far'. On the plus side, Hubski was great, as it always is. I can't believe I've been around as long as I have and it's great to see all the new people and how the community has changed but maintained its core. Here's to a year where our discourse and the world is less polemic. Hopefully EDIT: You know, going back and reading that, I'm actually pretty fond of that comment. You'll usually find that if I write something, I do it stream of consciousness in a flurry/fury of writing. Perhaps I go back and proofread and edit and tweak, usually adding a bit (as I'm currently doing), but I usually find what I write to be a mess and incoherent and missing the heart of what I wanted to say. But I struck a balance in that one that I like. So thanks for bringing it to my attention again, it's good to know that others feel what I'm putting forth on occasion and that's I'm not the rambling town drunk.
