I read The Economist for, what, about 15 years - it heavily overlapped my 20+ years of the WSJ. I got tired of its predictable bent towards ever more government intervention for every problem, but I still love the viewpoint of the US from abroad, politically. Sometimes they really can skewer the point, but other times you just say: whoa, did not see it going there!

This is one of the times they really get it right. Really worth reading.

They're not nearly as 'big government' as you paint them to be. They're one of the most respectable publications that is highly critical of the war on drugs and Asian state capitalism.

Possibly they have changed, though the last few times I've leafed through at the Admirals club it seemed the same old stuff - the delightful (minute examination of the political changes in an African country so small you need a BIG map to see it) and the predictable (America needs to get moving on its safety net!).

Perhaps your definition of big government is merely different than mine. I'm more of a pre-FDR government guy. Heck, I'd take pre-LBJ and count my children lucky.

PS - I agree with you on the legal drug stance. They seem to see no issues with the situation in, say, Holland and wonder why we won't buy into that particular route.

I agree, it was a worth while read for me too. While I don't have your 20+ years of Economisting, I tend to enjoy their work more often than not.

I started reading it when I was in college (second time) and majoring in Economics, kept my subscription because it was easy to take 6 hours of reading in my briefcase for flights to SFO.
