NYPD has always thought like this. However, they are currently so delusional that they're helping the cause of our movement.
The things they've stopped doing are the vehicle behind which they've been able to harass specific people and communities. Look at the numbers quoted, if you live here, not a single person was talking about "oh no everything is so terrible on the streets." Nothing has changed. The police work they've refused to do is inconsequential. And that's been one of the major points.
um, this is part of what we've wanted and been protesting about. broken wondows = quality of life policing which is the primary vehicle for harassment of certain demographics (read: black, hispanic, anything Brown people.)
Anyone complaining about this is catching the side eye.
Anyone tracking the (public) police forums will immediately notice a lot of cops threatening to slack off. "You don't appreciate what we do? We'll just stop doing it." It'd be interesting to start tracking the numbers in other major cities, see if they follow suit. It will be equally interesting to see if the NYPD cottons on to the fact that their strategic inaction has thrown their uselessness into sharp relief.
