    Authoritarian. If you don't like the University's ruling, you don't appeal: you leave.

I'm not throwing my hat into the rest of this argument, but I wanted to mention that this isn't always the case. My university does have an appeals process, and students are afforded the right to have somebody at their student conduct hearings to represent them during the first hearing and/or during an appeals hearing.

To be fair, I'm not completely intimate with the details of how university justice/punishment works, and I'm also sure it varies from college to college. For instance, after thinking about it, I'm willing to bet religious schools may actually care about students' amoral behavior off campus, depending on how severe it was.
