I had a discussion (and am still having this discussion) on reddit about Trans rights, mostly about the rights of transpeople to use the bathroom they feel most comfortable with.
But i look around, and even though I see problems in my world that effect me every day, nothing in my life compares to the bullshit that black, brown, asian and arabic people go through every fucking day. Of the 10 trans people murdered in the US so far this past year, 6 were trans women of colour. One was murdered just a few days ago, beating on a door, calling out for help as she was murdered after her attacker had attempted to rob her.
Her life mattered. Eric Garner's life mattered. Michael Brown's life mattered. Manuel Loggins Jr,'s Life Mattered. Amadou Diallo's life mattered. Rumain Brisbon, who was shot just two days ago while dropping of fast food to his children - His life mattered.
How many names do I have to list before we can see that this problem is systemic?
I want to spit these feelings out, because they taste like bile and anti-depressants. I want to say that I can do something, but I am ultimately helpless as an international student.
- They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
