- Chuck D discusses Public Enemy’s masterpiece—the art, the politics and the altered perspective of rap’s young guns
I've been saying it for years, Chuck D is the greatest MC of all time. His voice so rich and deep. His cadence so sharp and powerful. And the politically minded lyrics he writes are both heartbreaking and empowering. PE was what made me notice what was going on in rap as an artform. Growing up a metalhead in the 80's and seeing Scott Ian of Anthrax wearing PE shirts to gigs made me curious. "Who are these cats that a BAMF like Scott Ian supports their scene?" When I first listened to them, it was like a door to a whole other world had been kicked open. Hearing all that righteous anger about issues that I was blissful unaware of really rocked my young mind. Still listen to a lot of PE to this day. In fact... ...this song still gives me the good chills every time I hear it late at night.
