On subject, I was given this tonight: And was told it had just won best American Rye. It was pretty nice, really heavy on the citrus notes, but well balanced. Enjoy!
Probably depends on the length it's been aged. I've had relatively young Yamazaki, and I've never been blown away. Haven't had any of the old stuff, nor the sherry cask. Could be different. Ever tried it? Anyway, leave it to the Post to write an article about Scotch and not once use the proper spelling. Also this: Which makes anyone who knows thing one about cars almost spit whisky out their nose with laughter. Japanese didn't even sell Lexus in Japan until like 2005 or something, because they aren't a luxury car worthy of the Japanese. They are Toyotas with leather seats and a nav system that were hastily pieced together, rebranded, and thrown into the American market in the 90s to take advantage of Americans' predisposition to thinking that "foreign" is a stand-in for "good" (part of me thinks that Toyota paid Biggie Smalls a shit load of money to rap about them). Lexus remains today the laughing stock of luxury car makers, and Toyota continues laughing their way to the bank every time they sell one (who wouldn't want to sell a Camry for $50k?). Hopefully, for the sake of Suntory, Japanese whisky isn't like a Lexus at all. Part of me thinks that kicking Scotland out of the top five of the Bible is an attempt to stir up controversy to sell more copies. Why the hell would I buy the 2015 Whiskey Bible when all but the newest releases are the same thing as the 2014? I have yet to be impressed by a Yamazaki, even the $90 a bottle stuff. I fundamentally believe that the Japanese use their tastebuds differently, as the overwhelming majority of their food and beverages leave me cold. To be fair, the article was about whiskeys, not Scotch, which is how they can say 2nd, 3rd and 4th place belong to bourbon (even if #3 is actually rye). But yeah. I used to think the wine guys were nuts; apparently the whiskey guys are even stupider.
Good news. Soon maybe Indian whiskies will get some more recognition as well.
