I was perusing the profiles of some of the users here on hubski, and stumbled across thenewgreen's post about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan," a Pakistani Qawwali singer" (to quote thenewgreen). I thought it would be interesting to juxtapose the ethnic Pakistani music with that of a modern Pakistani band, The Kominas.
The Kominas are within the genre of punk music called Taqwacore, which uses Islam as a center theme for their songs. I've been researching modern music that has originated from Islamic countries or from people with an Islamic background. I highly recommend everyone to watch the VBS.tv full length documentary titled "Heavy Metal in Baghdad", as well as viewing the documentary on Taqwacore by the name of "Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam" if you are interested in more!

It's odd to think, though, of exactly how much this music is "Pakistani". If the lyrics didn't sound Middle Eastern to me, I probably wouldn't be able to set this apart from American or British rock music of some sort (though, admittedly, I don't have an intricate knowledge of music structure and so on). In a certain sense, you could say that only the traditional music is "true" Pakistani music.
I did enjoy the song, though. Songs in languages I don't speak really make me wish I did so as to understand them.

There has to be some Pakastani popular music that is less "western". This sounds like a poor version of a "Bad Religion" song with Pakastani vocals. I imagine that there is "non-traditional" Pakastani music that sounds intrinsically "Pakastani". -I hope so for Pakistan's sake. It's always nice to listen to what's playing in other parts of the globe though. -Glad I checked it out.
As for the video, was that Cornel West in there? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornel_West
I'm glad you mentioned 'Heavy Metal in Baghdad' it was on my list of things to watch, and I forgot about it. I'll put Taqwacore on there too. Thanks for this one. I would have probably never encountered the Kominas otherwise. I felt bad for that tiger in that video though.
