It seems like this problem is endemic to publishing; at least that's what makes the press most commonly. Is it a supply and demand problem (i.e. too many young workers), or is that industry just full of sadists who were poorly treated as young people and are exacting "revenge" on the undeserving? By comparison, in the auto industry, its common for engineering interns to get up to $15-20/hr, depending on how much schooling they've completed.

They all secretly dream of being the protagonist in "the Devil Wears Prada". I know a girl that was an intern at El magazine and ended up an editor. -It can happen. She ended up hating it and is now working at the economist. From what I gather, she's much happier. She's brilliant, beautiful, speaks chinese and used to work for the state department yet she still fell prey to the intern at a fashion magazine flame that attracts to many of our young moths.
