I love/hate Facebook, and would love to see an non-evil version. Is Ello evil in disguise? Any Hubskiers got any insight?
Meh. I'm ready for the next Facebook and I hope it's more open and decentralized and privacy minded but let's be realistic - it takes a lot to start a social network. You need everyone on it. Google couldn't even do it and they forced people to make accounts. Further, trying to start a general privacy based social network without targeting niche groups is silly. It is diaspora all over again. Make a privacy minded social network for programmers and grow it from there. Even Facebook started as college students only.
I got an invite, and it just kinda looks like a jumbled cross between tumblr and twitter and G+, with nothing standing out at all, except aesthetically. There's not even a chat feature, which means it's not a viable social option for me at all. As for the privacy thing, that's not sustainable, and I don't buy it. edit: oh snap! Ello is founded by the guy who makes the Budnitz bikes, which are pretty hated on (read the comments) , overhyped and made from a stolen design. I remember seeing these and just laughing until people actually started buying a $5k commuter bike. This is definitely not the thing it claims to be.
I think it's just the good ol' hype-train and not much else.
My impression is that it has a serious problem of predetermined power users as a result of its invite-only system under a probably dishonest ethos of privacy. It seems like kind of a reversal, actually, where the early adopters of it - super publicized - have a significantly higher influence because it is by them and only through them that you can access the site. Kind of like a pyramid scheme in the realm of social capital, if you will.
Can any of you offer me an invite? I'm very eager to try out the site and see it for myself-- i need to get away from Facebook and I kinda got turned off from tumblr very quickly.
Hey, you and nowaypablo, I apparently signed up to get an invitation and got in, so now I've got invite codes to give. Ya'll still interested?
I only got one cause this girl i was kinda obsessed with last year is one of those hipster blogger-type people with like a kajillion thousand followers. I tried to emulate the pseudo-creative douchebaggery here.
Everyone is still trying to figure it out. There was already an incident over the privacy settings, which is unforgivable at this point in history. I'm attracted to it because, well, "the normals" aren't there.
