Maybe I've got my concept of "dystopia" down wrong. It's definitely a world where a bunch of humans are captive to alien brainslugs that are bent on taking over that side of the Universe.

After thinking about it for a bit, I think you might be right. The only argument I can think of as to why it's not a dystopia is that the series is about a war. The Yeerks were winning, but they didn't have absolute control yet. Society is in a state of flux instead of mostly stable. I'm not sure if you need a stable society to call it a dystopia, though.
