I don't believe that consolidation of parties is a good thing. We should have more choice not less. Said that, perhaps a merger of the Liberals and the Greens would bring together the partitioned left, although I don't see anything that the liberals have to offer which the Green party doesn't already have. Whatever the shape, we need a strong left to fight the recent increase of popularity of the right and far right.

Well, while consolidation of parties isn't a good thing, it is the Nash equilibrium for a FPTP voting system like we have in Canada and the UK. If you want more choice, you need to adopt a system that supports it. Also, in Canada, the NDP is separate from both the Liberals and the Greens.
