They named a suburb "Santa Fe Springs". This is brilliantly hilarious for an Angeleno, as it's the marker for failure of car-based commuting here as well. SFS is the first town in Los Angeles County when you drive north on Interstate 5. It's famous for the Orange Crush, where the five lanes plus a separated HOV lane from Orange County (which has a larger highway budget) merge into an ancient set of three lanes without a carpool lane. When you see the old drive-in with "Santa Fe Springs" on it, you want to laugh. Then again, they have a central government that wants to solve the problem just as quickly. In three years they built the high-speed train line that is taking forever to do here (cough Central Valley teabaggers cough). Looking to Portland is a great idea. Oh wait... tens of millions of Chinese hipsters? Oh no. What will hipster music sound like in Mandarin or Cantonese? Lots of bagpipes, perhaps...
