Most of the free classics on Project Gutenberg are available for free directly from the Kindle Bookstore.
I just looked up the founder, Michael Hart, he typed the first 313 books, including the Bible and the three mission statements for Project Gutenberg are:
Totally awesome!!! Now, I might buy a kindle too :) "Encourage the Creation and Distribution of eBooks"
"Help Break Down the Bars of Ignorance and Illiteracy"
"Give As Many eBooks to As Many People As Possible"

A wonderful treasure trove for classic texts. I do go elsewhere for those articles that aren't, shall we say, for the taking.

Gutenberg also has an audio version as an app. It offers 2300 audiobooks read by volunteers. -Cool premise, a bit clunky as an app but worth 99cents. Not sure if it is officially part of the Gutenberg project but it's nice on a long drive regardless.
