The previous year, in 2008, there were 30 fatalities over the course of 2.6 million jumps, according to the United States Parachute Association. For tandem jumps the rate was even lower: Only 0.0003% of jumpers perished.
Pretty good odds, you never think you'll be one of the .0003% of people that die and frankly, she's lucky she didn't and Dave is lucky to be alive as well. The guy is certainly a hero for sacrificing his body to save hers. An amazingly selfless act.

This just underscores why I'll likely never go skydiving. Have you ever been? Would you like to some day?

Never been -- who on hubski has?

Has no appeal to me, I'd much prefer hang-gliding if I get the chance.

I went, it was fun but I don't think I'll ever go again.

Thousands of times more so. One of my goals is to go carless in my everyday life in the next few years. It'll require some luck as far as jobs and housing go, but it's definitely possible.
