Used-to-be friend of mine co-founded this band. After he left them for law school, they broke onto the local scene.
I'm not really a fan of most of their stuff. They're just not very good, and they hide their lack of chops/originality beneath a thick slurry of cynicism-irony-cool. Which in and of itself is kind of played. But this song trades that in for a very self-conscious narrative veneer of the same, kind of a full circle of self-reference wherein the irony is applied ironically in order to bring focus to the defensive aspects of the song. Maybe they thought they could do that because the song craft is fundamentally sound in a way that most of their stuff isn't. Or maybe it's good because it dispenses with the cooler-than-thou bullshit. Anyhow, I like this song.
