Four years seems the standard length of time to put into a startup, I think jedberg and others put similar times into reddit. Is that just how long it takes people to realize that they want to put more time into the things they've neglected?

I recall jedberg eluding to his wife being a factor in the decision (which is entirely reasonable). I think when a significant other is involved, they are probably going to raise the points before the 'over-working' person does. My guess is that the Steve Job types of the world have a higher divorce rate than the rest of the population.
That said, I would hesitate to take this too far. Some folks can strike a balance and achieve a lot (in their field), and some couples are career couples that can adapt to higher demands than others. It's nice to see that he could recognize what he wanted different before regrets stacked too high.
