I have a lot to be thankful for. Not because I am well off financially (I am not) or have a lot of material thing (I don't). It is because I am blessed with such a loving family and incredible friends and have met some truly remarkable people along the way. When I give to a charitable cause, it gives me the sense that I am honoring them and it just feels good to know that I am able to help in a small way.

I should also note that my grandpa guided me towards giving. He never sat me down and had conversations. It was through his actions. He lived very frugally so that he can save money to build a school in his home town. People still remember him fondly whenever I go back and visit.

Thanks LIM, a little bit can go a long way. Do you think that you would be more likely to give your resources to a specific person than an organization? If so, why?

I would be more likely to give my resources to a group. I usually find myself giving during natural disasters like the devastating earthquakes that rocked China and Haiti. I also enjoy giving to open source projects like the NetBSD Foundation via direct donation and buying swag from their online store. As for individuals, I seldom give money. I am more likely to buy a hot meal or packaged food for them.

What if the organization was one that helped facilitate your giving to an individual. So you knew that when you gave money to "X" organization, that money was used to buy hot soup for "Margaret".

That would depend on "X" organization's track record and why "Margaret" is in the position that she is in. But if all things being equal, I will more likely contribute to an organization that helps a group of people than just an individual.

But isn't that "group" of people just a mass of individuals? Don't you feel like the organization would have more accountability if you were connected to an individual that could verify "yes, I did indeed receive soup"?

In that case, I could just as easily contribute to that person directly and by pass the overhead costs.
