"Nolan’s trilogy is poised to go down as the best Batman movies ever made..."
Am I the only one who a) thinks that the Tim Burton movies are the best, and b) thinks Nolan lacks talent? You only need to see Following to see what he's capable of when he doesn't have any money. Its unwatchable.
I think it is perfectly excusable for a director or writer's first feature to not measure up to their later works. Ever since then, he has created Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception, all universally successful and well-reviewed movies. I think a director such as Nolan has more than proven over the last decade that he, more than just about anybody else in Hollywood, deserves those big budgets.
While I certainly won't knock Burton, as his Batman movies were enjoyable... there are certainly many faults in Batman Returns that can be attributed to the elevated free reign he was given after the success of the first. They're too Burtonian and stray away from the flavor of Batman a little too much. A throng of penguins with missile launchers strapped to their backs? The Penguin gargling black blood at the end and being dragged into his subterranean grave by said penguins with their flippers while Gregorian chanting goes on in the background? Might as well affix enormous scissors to Batman's hands while you're at it.
What about Nolan's Batman renditions did you find lacking?
