Schadenfreude isn't random in the case of futbol. There is legitimate hatred involved here, between teams and players and countries and coaches. Sure, it's funny when a toddler drops her ice cream cone and starts to cry, that's schadenfreude as I understand the definition of the word. But this is purely about the vanquishing of one's enemies and relishing the lamentations of their women. :D

Besides, fierce competition makes for a better game. Even if your side loses. Probably. I think.

Did you watch the game yesterday? Just curious because I haven't had the chance to discuss it with anyone. I couldn't believe I was watching a game at what is supposed to be the highest level of competition in professional sport. Wow. I left the room for 5 or so minutes ( I have small kids) and all of a sudden there were 3 goals!

I was rooting for Germany at the outset but after those first few goals I quickly began hoping that Brazil could put some sort of comeback together. As you no doubt know, no such comeback would happen. 7-1 Germany over Brazil in Brazil -Craziness.

edit: Also, your definition of schadenfreude is well taken but for the casual soccer fan, this game was akin to a kid dropping an ice cream cone. It's not a blood sport for everyone. Though, it should be.

I hurried out of work early so that I could catch the second half. I didn't check the score before I left work, because I assumed it would be a max of 1-0 either way. I had to look around the screen a bit when I got home, looking for the score box, because it wasn't even registering with me that 5-0 was possible. I don't have a strong rooting interest with these teams, so I was mainly disappointed that it wasn't a good match. Maybe I'll root for the Dutch in today's game to support of veen.

We could use the support. I always feel like our Dutch team doesn't really belong in the final 4, especially if you see how good the others can be.

It's also mental preparation to disappointment.

I was standing in line at a store when I saw a TV scoreboard displaying 5-0 and only 30 minutes on the clock. My jaw was open for a solid minute.

I'm impressed with the maturity of the response from Brazilians, they took it in stride. Apparently they only riot about things that actually matter.

I'll be cheering for the Dutch today because 1) I told veen a couple weeks ago that I think they have a good chance to win the cup 2) Deutchland vs. Dutchland is mildly humerous, and 3) I like watching superstars fall from glory at the hands of good teamwork.

Yeah, it was pretty unbelievable. I'll jump in on the veen bandwagon and root for the Dutch as well. Games at 4 o'clock EST right?

ButterflyEffect  ·  3790 days ago  ·  link  ·

Yeah, it's at four. Sorry veen, but I've been on the Argentina bandwagon all tournament. I love Messi and Di Maria.

Damned penalties again! Fuck.

ButterflyEffect  ·  3790 days ago  ·  link  ·

Kinda surprised you didn't pull that Krul fuckery like you did against Costa Rica.

veen  ·  3790 days ago  ·  link  ·

Van Gaal saw the opportunity for a 1-0 goal and preferred that. Understandable move.

flagamuffin who are you pulling for?

user-inactivated  ·  3790 days ago  ·  link  ·

Robben to score, excitement to happen. I loathe Di Maria so his absence means I'm already happen to matter what.

If Soccer was a religion, this game was Brazil realizing their God isn't real.

In this game, Germany:

Made themselves the top scoring team in the WC history (taking the top spot from Brazil)

Equaled Brazil's worst ever defeat (6:0, back in 1920, against Uruguay)

Achieved the biggest ever victory in WC semi-finals (last one was 6:1)

Made Klose the top scorer in WC history (taking over the top spot from Ronaldo)

Scored 4 goals in 6 minutes & 5 under 29. No team has ever done that in WC.

Scored as many goals as Brazil conceded in their previous 9 World Cup final games combined

Bestowed Brazil their first official defeat at home since 1975.

Became the team with most appearances in World Cup Finals at 8, after being tied with Brazil at 7.

Scored 5 goals before the first half was over, which I believe hasn't been done since 1949 in Poland.

And some other records that I can't remember. These motherfuckers beat the record for most RECORDS.

The newspapers in Brazil are ridiculous. Read a tagline - "This was not a nightmare. This was real." This will be talked about in Football for decades to come.

A user on Reddit compiled the headlines/covers from 50 Brazilian Newspapers after yesterdays game.

user-inactivated  ·  3790 days ago  ·  link  ·

You'll note that like 80 percent of them are pictures of crying fans.

thenewgreen  ·  3790 days ago  ·  link  ·

While the other 20% are of a young Art Garfunkel in a Brazil Jersey, clearly upset.

Ah yes.

That's amazing, thank you for those stats. It sounds like I picked the right game to watch!

Alrighty, gotta head home now to catch some more, hopefully historic soccer.
