What sort of gun would you want? At the age of 17 I owned an SKS with folding stock, 30 round mag and bayonet: Right now, in every state but California, you can run out and buy a .50 BMG sniper rifle with 8 round mag: (AKA the "Cobra Assault Cannon" from Robocop) How 'bout an HK91 with drum mag? .308 which means it'll go through most any body armor: If you really want "deterrence" I recommend the Lahti 20mm anti-tank rifle: (fun fact: When the Finnish used these against the USSR in the Winter War, they supplied this "rifle" with a trailer to tow behind jeeps) Then again, all this stuff requires aiming. Sometimes you just don't have time for that. That's when you need an Armsel Striker: And hey, if that's not enough for you, sign up for a Class III NFA. Then things start getting really silly:
KB I don't understand it (I'm an American for the record): As I said above, first we want the guns, and then we don't - back and forth it goes. While this is going on people are bitching about tighter gun control and then the other side counters with looser control.
The point is that is there anyway to keep both sides happy?
I think the FAC that Lil mentioned here Is a good idea get. Get a revocable licence then get whatever gun you want. I want an anti-aircraft gun, a bazooka and some anti-tank things.
If I understand the nuts and bolts of his argument, he essentially wants private parties to do background checks before selling guns, since all purchases through a dealer already have mandatory background checks. This would require giving private citizens access to the NICS database and keeping a registry of guns and gun owners. I don't think either of these are feasible in the US.
I'll say what I always say. in Sweden we hunt a lot but we also have very restrictive gun control laws. In Sweden less people get shot.
Urban Poverty = black folks? Canada has close to the U.S. Ethnic / Cultural breakdown I'll say what I always say. in Canada they hunt a lot but they also have very restrictive gun control laws. In Canada less people get shot. Perhaps if Urban poverty is not just code for Black Folks (I am confident you are not using it that way but I like to tease people.) then increasing the minimum wage ending redlining etc would do more to decrease gun violence than less guns. but remember the most common gun crime is a white dude blowing his own head off.
Well, I was thinking more drug crime, gang activity and general economic disenfranchisement than a specific ethnicity. I seem to recall that there are stats to back that up but I can't look up right now because Brazil v Chile. And I focused on the 11,000 gun homicides because that's what the person interviewed did. I agree with you--I think economic action (and the decriminalization/regulation of recreational drugs) will do FAR more to reduce violence than enacting (what I consider to be) impractical gun control legislation. I'm on the fence about drastic changes to a minimum wage, but I definitely agree that making proper financial services and/or financial literacy education available to people in redlined areas will do immense good.
Sweden has a bit of those issues. Google "rosengård". We've had riots in Sweden because of those issues.
I was going to write a reply to xenophon but yours made mine redundant.
Agreed on cultural differences. Canada is looser on drugs tighter on guns.
