I've never ridden a bike as far as I did this morning and last evening. It was strange. I was expecting some kind of grueling journey that I would barely be able to recover from when I returned home. You see, I'm not generally a very athletic person. While others are jogging and hiking, I'm refreshing global waiting for Mindwolf to post the next great leap in the world of science, or for another introspective argument of faith and philosophy. Or fart jokes. Those work, too. But I wanted a change. I wanted to feel like I had accomplished something. I don't know if you can really call 11.3 miles something, but it counts for me. I had traveled the path to my destination many times by car, so I knew where I was going. The way there was a challenge. It was evening. There was traffic. But every pedal was satisfying. After an hour and ten minutes, I arrived at my friend's house where I planned to turn around. It was there that I discovered a LAN party had been taken place. Nine hours later, and it was time to go home. This experience was vastly different. No cars. No noise. Passing by the wildlife unmolested by humans so early. I can't even count on my fingers how many rabbits I saw (yes I can, it was 9). I saw the sunrise. I saw the street lights turn off. I got to watch the world wake up. It was a fresh experience for me. It was also helpful to get rid of that nice layer of flab that comes after countless Doritos and slices of pizza.
In summation, if you bike or walk, good for you. If you don't, you really should.
Probably not -- between staying up all night and stumbling home or leaving in the northern winter twilight to get to work or class by 8:00 a.m., you've all seen crepuscular light. But if you haven't rubbed up against the crack of dawn - give it a try, and REPORT IN. I saw the sunrise.
Isn't it great? And the quiet, the rabbits, all of it. Sunrise beats sunset in my world any day of the week. Is it possible that there are people in the hubskiverse who have never seen a sunrise?
This made me want to go biking. I think I'll do that today. Thanks for motivating me.
