I have a couple of those plastic childrens wading pools and this year I had been reading up on container gardens, so I decided to drill some holes in the bottom and try it. I used miracle grow but am now hearing making your own works better in container gardens. It's been a few weeks and I've got some nice growth on my pumpkin/watermelon pool (I'll be using trellis to grow them up instead of letting them spread.) and my beans and peas have sprouted recently as well in the other. I'm also growing tomatoes in large flower pots. I was just wondering if anyone had some tip and ideas on how to get the most out of swimming pool gardens.
I don't know if you guys have a preferred image hosting site but I just used the imgur. I also chose to just link to them as opposed to posting them as I have no clue what resolution or size this camera uses. Bush Beans (Green Beans) and Cowpeas (Black Eyed Peas) http://imgur.com/NjDsc0e Pumpkins are the Bushy ones on the sides, corn in the middle and maybe by the pumpkin, Watermelon is in the small pods, one of them appears to be a dud.
I'm not a gardener myself, so I don't have much to offer except to say that I'd definitely be interested in seeing photos of what you've created. What's the advantage to a container garden as opposed to using your yard? Is it for people with no yard space? Thanks and best of luck with your gardens.
There really isn't a lot of space in a townhouses backyard and our wonderful new city voted to remove the provision that allowed use of 30% of the side and front yard for vegetable gardens because they are unsightly. So it's basically down to yard space for me, but the lady I got the idea from said she does it because she can put them on a tables and not have to bend over to garden which is easier on her back.
