I inherited my father's entire collection of old reggae and soca cuts from throughout his life straight into the 90s. I've also been adding my own records ( all house and techno). It's super fun to interact with music this way, but I dont think I could ever part with the massive collection my father left me or the ones I've since collected myself. Maybe if I had doubles, but I don't. A record loan club where we send them back would be better IMO. Or something like you send a record out to travel through the entire club before it heads back home.
That's great. My buddy inherited his grandmothers collection of jazz and reggae records a few years back. She lived on Jamaica during the 80's and had a bunch of albums by artist that we had never heard before. She was also friends with a bunch of jazz greats (she had dated a few but the only one we know about for sure was Ron Carter). Getting someone's record collection who was deep into a genera is an intense way to get exposed to music.
That's a great call -send it out until it travels back home. Still, I like the idea of gifting an album. It could be something you find at the dollar bin in a record store, it doesn't have to be precious to you. It could be an album you've never listen to, but thought it looked interesting. There are any number of reasons to gift an album, I don't think we should be giving away things that have sentimental value because chances are that sentiment doesn't translate to the new owner
well, I think the gesture is devalued if you intentionally go shop for a record to give instead of something you have in your own collection. Have to sit on the thought more.
I think that depends. If you think you have a feel for the person based on what they've posted here then I think it's pretty cool that you would go out and pick something up intentionally for them. I feel I could do this for any number of Hubski users. In fact, I already know what I would get for lil. I own it but I'd go buy it for her too.
I'm trying to downsize. I love my records, but I can't see taking them with me on my next move or expanding my collection. On the other hand -- I would treasure anything from the great tng. (I'd be very happy with your next CD!) Anyway, one step at a time. First I have to pull out my Zombies & VU and give them one last play!! Then find a record store and ask them for a record mailer. . . .
Wait, lil, if you are trying to get rid of records and have lots of give away, please please please talk to me about your collection, what you'd be willing to part with, and how much you'd like from each record. Depends on what you have. I have about 100 albums in my collection. I wouldn't mind more.
I have just the album for you. My wife and I listen to it often, the album art alone is worth getting the album. I'm excited to send it to you. As for the next tng album, I'm sorry to disappoint but I'm only releasing it on vinyl and mp3. No CD's anymore. I can't tell you the last time I bought a CD.
