For a more top-down, less navel-up view, try The Mighty Wurlitzer: How the CIA played America. It's one of those books I'm not far enough along in. Think I've finished 2/3rds of it. It's kind of interesting to read about all the CIA psyop programs at American universities but not quite interesting enough.
