One of the authors, Dr. Eric Brewer of Berkeley, is quite influential in the field. He and his team did ground breaking work at Inktomi; his CAP theorem is considered important and he is arguably one of the spiritual fathers of the noSQL movement. He's even a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery.
Naturally I went ducking for more information to see if the good Dr. had more to offer on the subject (as the paper above is from 1997).
