I will leave this here. Michael sandel is a lecturer at Harvard that has an online course on morals, pretty awesome stuff (used the parts on Kant for my Bioethics assignment). He deals with the exact question stated in the article. Choosing to kill one man instead of 5 is a totalitarian argue. The numbers count. I consider myself a deontologist and would not do it. An interesting case depicting how different countries deal with deontology vs. totalitarianism is the case of a kidnapping that happened in germany. Magnus gäfgen kidnapped Jakob von Metzler (a son of a well known banker). Here is a video where Michael Sandel discusses this topic. <-- the link doesn't seem to work right now, and I didn't have the time to find a working mirror :( Enjoy reading!
