To me the amazing thing is that reading the story you find that this poor woman started her business as a very practical matter with no pretentiousness whatsoever, and from there it seemed to evolve into an emperor's new clothes type of situation. But in the end, is it that much weirder to pay $4 for toast than $4 for a muffin, which is pretty common in many upscale coffee shops already? Same basic ingredients; same basic overhead. We're all buying decadence, not sustenance, anyway.
That is the heart of the hypocrisy the economic system that produces the $4 toast buying class of morons with more disposable income than sense produced her poverty. If we had a sensible distribution and decent mental healthcare she would not have to be a trained monkey for the amusement of hipster douche bags. Do you think this toast fad is going to get her to retirement? Heartwarming.
