I can't vote for this guy. -I just hope for a viable 3rd party candidate or maybe even a GOP'er that isn't insane. I don't know enough about Huntsman but from what I've gathered, he seems capable. He probably won't get the nomination but if he did, it would at least turn my head. Obama has let us down though.

The sane candidates can't get much past the school board. It seems like you have to be a complete sociopath to be a "successful" politician these days. It's hard for me to believe that we will get anyone in the white house who isn't a complete shill for their party, unless there is some type of revolution that dismantles the party system. Maybe I'm a pessimist when it comes to this sort of thing.

You would have to be crazy to put you and your family through the ridiculous, gossip driven circus that is cable news media.
alpha0  ·  4714 days ago  ·  link  ·
I read something today at a family brunch gathering -- no I do not pay for this rag and avoid it online when possible -- that made my blood boil:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/opinion/sunday/douthat-Par...

As you can see, the "sane candidates" are called "deranged" by the New York Times. (That "crazy" fellow wants to dismantle the Federal Reserve -- "he disqualified himself" (google it - 12/28 editorial)

We don't need a revolution; we simply need collective resolve.

Maybe the most true statement in that article: "Social spending grows and overseas commitments multiply no matter which party is in power"

"That's why its called the American Dream, you'd have to be asleep to believe it". Perhaps the OWS movement is the first flicker of awakening?
alpha0  ·  4713 days ago  ·  link  ·
true story: ~2004 (I think) was sitting in Bryant Park (NYC) tap tapping away on the laptop. (I like coding in fresh air ;) And this young woman and a man with camera and microphone were going around, apparently interviewing people. So I get my turn too and she asked me: "if you were running for office, what would be your campaign slogan?". I didn't miss a beat and immediately said "99% of us have 100% in common." (Buddy of mine and I had been talking about our general condition (here and globally) on and off for a while now ..)

I wish I could buy into OWS, but fundamentally, I found the focus on "wall street" as entirely misdirected. It has dawned on me (albeit belatedly in a god, I'm stupid way) that all the focus on mythologizing "the powers that be" may have been psycholinguistic programming all along. The very strong subliminal message of "OWS" is that "we the people" are powerless and that our governmental institutions are illegitimate: why else would you appeal to wall street for redress?

But are we, really? If that were the case, "wall street" would not insist on "occupying" important governmental seats e.g. Tim Geithner ...

thenewgreen  ·  4713 days ago  ·  link  ·
You're right, if we have no power then the need to buy our representatives would hold no sway. I agree that the biggest flaw in the OWS movement is the "WS" and not the "O". It seems to me that they are taking strides to unify behind a similar slogan of "99% of us have 100% in common" (which btw you should copywriter and make some t-shirts etc ---it's very appealing).

Ah, "If only a young Alpha0 had started the movement, it might have just been called the 99% movement. -It rolls off the tongue better, for sure.

young thenewgreen can take it away.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%2299%25+of+us+have+100%25+in+comm... I get zero results so I guess I get to establish the copyright: Creative Commons 2.0 (and do some good with that dough ..)

Tell you what, you create the shirts, give me the link and I'll help spread the word. You'll get sales.

No pressure, I'd just do it as a favor. I really do think it's catchy.

I'll add more later: http://imgur.com/a/jxor0 What do you think?
thenewgreen  ·  4712 days ago  ·  link  ·
I like it! Nice work. Let me know when you are ready for me to pull the chord.

My only suggestion is that the 9's are maybe a little too chunky. Otherwise, it's awesome. In fact, when it's done you should post it here for suggestions.

alpha0  ·  4712 days ago  ·  link  ·
Thanks for the suggestions! Once I get a few more designs, I'll do a toplevel post.

But this is the easy part. Does this mean I would have to setup shop in my apartment and pack t-shirts? I've never been an entrepenoodle :)

mk  ·  4712 days ago  ·  link  ·
I'm getting one! I agree about the 9's it took me a second to see them. Otherwise, it's awesome. :)
alpha0  ·  4712 days ago  ·  link  ·
Glad you like it mk! I've plans for those chubby 9s but I'll tweak it if it is unreadable. I heard amazon does fulfillments so I have to check it out.

I would just set up an online store and provide a link to buy. That said, as I recall you are actually in the city and could head down to a GA and shake some hands and offer up your wares. If I were to try and do this in a really big way, I would copywriter the phrase, buy a URL and start making tshirts/stickers/signs/posters etc. I would spend time in all the OWS chat rooms and have good conversations with people and then mention that they should visit my site. But first things first, just set up an online store through someone that isn't too expensive.

I know from mk that it's hard to find one that is affordable though. Once you have a link to share though, I'm glad to help.

thenewgreen  ·  4712 days ago  ·  link  ·
once people see others wearing the shirt, they'll want one. I'd want one, it's a cool phrase/idea.
alpha0  ·  4712 days ago  ·  link  ·
Of course, and I appreciate that, my friend.
thenewgreen  ·  4709 days ago  ·  link  ·
We've got 2 on back order ;)
alpha0  ·  4708 days ago  ·  link  ·
Question remains if I look good in orange overalls. :)
thenewgreen  ·  4708 days ago  ·  link  ·
How so? I'm pretty sure making t-shirts is still permissible. ... isn't it?

Hunstman is too reasonable to get far in that party. Seriously, I can't even make sense of that party. We have a pretty good Republican governor Rick Snyder here in MI, who I voted for, but he has a hard time with his crazy legislators. He wants to get MI out in front and prepare for the Healthcare reform, because if he doesn't, then the Feds do it for MI. But, the idiot GOP legislators are just putting it off because they are fundamentally against the legislation. Ironically, because they hate the idea of a Federal plan, they are going to leave MI with a Federal plan. Unless Snyder can knock some sense into them, that is. The GOP is such a weird party.
b_b  ·  4714 days ago  ·  link  ·
They aren't weird; they're ideologues. Like what Newt Gingrich says, "I'm an idealist and a romantic and a permanent optimist. And that's the American tradition." (As an aside, its funny to me that modern idealism was the conception of Kant, who was the grand muse of Marx. And these assholes think that idealism is what makes America, a country that was founded on a series of ultra pragmatic compromises, great! I'm sure Newt was well worth that $2M in historian fees!) Ideology is killing our country from the Left and Right. What we need are pragmatic leaders who have reasonable goals and a good idea of how to achieve them.
