There are a few large buildings in Detroit that actually have subway stations built into the basement. It's really weird and cool. They were built at a time when everyone assumed that a subway was on the horizon. There's a well known (and probably true, but perhaps exaggerated) conspiracy theory out there about the Big Three shutting the idea down. Anyway, here we are in 2013, a full hundred years after the initial planning, and they've just broken ground on the so called M-1 Rail, a light rail system that will run on the surface up Woodward Avenue. It's a modest start, but a start nonetheless. I hope to see it extended all the way up Woodward to Birmingham eventually. That would be a dream come true for a lot of people. I don't have high hopes, however.
