Alexander Payne's populism. Charlie Bertsch, in Tuesday's Souciant.
I'm really looking forward to seeing this film. I haven't seen Payne's other works, but I had incorrectly assumed they play up the mystique and saturated aspects of their locales, but this one seemed different; more intent on deconstructing characters and evoking the upbringing and their origins. It seems he has always done this. I should look up his others. I've never been to the Midwest, but I wish to at least have a small home one dayin Montana. Something of another place to be, purely alone with nature and myself and silence and James Harrison's prose. There's something very communal in the act of solitude where everyone there is equally as separated from 'elsewhere'.
