I think this is so fantastic. Not just the miniaturization of technology, but also the hive/cloud/distributed/collaborative concept. I think there is a huge potential now and in the future of this type of thinking. SETI and Phylo are onto something. (Phylo: http://phylo.cs.mcgill.ca/eng/index.html )

The aspect I like most about story is turning an entire methodology on it's ear and challenging the current way of doing things.

No doubt. It's things like this that make me think that the future is going to look much different than anything I can predict. Millions of little smart robots...

I can see an fighter jet being taken down by a swarm of little jet robots, or maybe a missile intercepted by the same.

We are finished when our police officers become swarms. :/
