This is a single oligodendrocyte, a myelinating brain cell. Myelin is the substance that "insulates" neurons. I photographed it using a laser scan confocal microscope. To visualize, the cell is stained with a couple antibodies that make it fluoresce when excited with the right wavelength (543nm in this case, which is a green light). For scale, the circular bit in the center (the nucleus) is about 8 micrometers is diameter. The color is false, so green is a loose thing here. The colors correlate to depth. Red is closer to you and blue is farther away.
You know, there are far less expensive ways to kill brain cells.
