This is Phil Spector we're talking about. You know, an actual murderer of women.
The song was written by Gerry Coffin and Carole King, so I don't know how much influence Spector had on the actual message of the song. If Spector had a hand in writing it I wouldn't be surprised but I guess I'm a little naive on how society viewed these matters back in those days.
Sure, but Phil chose to record it, and record it in a way that makes it sound like the singer is overcome with emotion. I get the sense that she is trapped and she knows it, but that she wouldn't want it any other way. To me, that's all Phil, even though the lyrics aren't his. I can't believe Carol King was in on this. I didn't know that when I posted it. She's an icon for a lot of women, people in general, maybe.
