I was perusing the Hubski Digital Music Swap thread started by delta, and I was struck by a comment from AdSeriatim suggesting playlists. that got me thinking about the possibility of curated playlists.
My thought was that they would be designed for someone who has never encountered that style of music, or that instrument, or whatever the specific theme of that playlist. The curators would then have to narrow it down to a maximum of 20, minimum of 8 representative examples of that playlist's theme, focusing on a "for the enthousiastic novice" sort of audience.
I don't know how much interest there would be regarding this, but I figured I would throw this idea to the wolves and see how torn up it gets.
I think 8 would be a good number. Too many examples and I lose interest, and anyways, it's intended to be a sampler and overview. I for one would like to see a playlist giving an overview of, perhaps, the development of the different periods of jazz.
Have you seen BLOB_CASTLE's #jazzhistory posts? Unfortunately, it looks like browsing by that tag yields nothing (fallout from last night's firefighting, mk?), but you can still get at them through BC's posts. edit: tag works now
Thanks for the mention! I haven't forgotten about these. Once things calm down a bit in terms of coursework, I'll be this like hotcakes.
I think 8 is a good number too, but at the same time, for the example you gave of the development of the different periods of jazz I would want more. maybe between 8 and 12? 20 is a bit much. though, regarding development of the different periods of jazz, wold you want a playlist for each period, or an overview of all in 8-12 tracks?
I guess there shouldn't be a hard number, but striving to keep the tracks to a minimum is a good idea. Whatever is deemed necessary. 8-12 would be fine, with the overview in just those 8-12 tracks. I feel if one enjoys part of the playlist they would able to explore on their own, which is half the fun.
| I feel if one enjoys part of the playlist they would able to explore on their own, which is half the fun.| for sure. I definitely would want this to be a jumping off point for exploration, or even more specific playlists.
what do you folks think about a guideline: - someone who starts a playlist should bring 4 suggestions to the table. Nothing set in stone, but something to get the ball rolling and spark discussion. i think the community needs to build the playlist (as much as possible), but some starting suggestions that can be a good shot in the arm to get things going.
I'd participate, I'd probably be able to help with jazz or hip hop playlists
that would be great, considering I have no real experience in hip hop. everyone's got a strength.
If you want to explore Dubstep or Synthpop I'm your guy. That sounded a lot cooler in my head...
https://soundcloud.com/nit-grit/the-mechanism-of-control That's a really good one to describe my taste in Dubstep. https://soundcloud.com/purity-ring/fineshrine-2 For Synthpop you really can't go wrong with Purity Ring. I'll try to put together a more complete playlist.
sounds good, those are music genres where i'm totally in the dark.
That actually sounds like an interesting idea. I know that there are already some playlists on youtube that try to do that type of thing. I think having different artists in the playlist would be best. Seeing as the person could just look up the 8(?) representative artists and look for further music by them.
for sure regarding the representative artists. that would help the playlists from devolving into "Just listen to Bob Marley" for Reggae, when there's so much more out there (I'm assuming, i'm not exactly an expert on reggae) one artist, one representative song, or piece, from their repertoire.
