Anti-intellectualism and the US government shutdown. Charlie Bertsch, in Tuesday's Souciant.
Slightly off topic, but in the article, this is said: "The animosity against Barack Obama runs much deeper obviously, often with racist overtones..." I want to know people's opinion about how true they think this statement is. I hear all the time (watch one episode of Bill Maher and you'll hear it at least five times) that Republicans mainlt son't want Obama to succeed because he's black. I just don't agree. We went through this ridiculous shutdown when Clinton was president, and they even impeached him for the most minor of transgression after a years long witch hunt. Clinton, obviously, was white. If these same things were done to Obama they would be met with cries of racism from the Left. While racism is obviously a thing, I think too much has been made of it with regard to why conservatives despise Obama so much. I think it has far more to do with the fact that he was the first president to push through universal health coverage (no matter how flawed), a goal of every Democratic president for decades, and something that is clearly antithetical to their belief system. So in the end, has he been treated worse than Clinton? I would argue that he has not, but what has changed is the willingness to obstruct, which likely would have been the case even if Hillary Clinton or John Kerry were president right now.
There's definitely a lot of racism amongst birthers and people who think he's secretly a muslim, and I've seen some awfully blatant bumper stickers. I don't think a white president would have fared any better though. The GOP is threatened and full of reactionaries, it would be foaming at the mouth at anyone.
