water  ·  3785 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: $11,000 for Every Household: Could Guaranteed Income Work for America?

Can you show your work? :)

Because if you had a sliding scale like in the article, i.e. cap at x amount of dollars, every dollar earned after that x subtracts .50 cents from each dollar of guaranteed income.

I think if you took all of the social welfare we have in the USA, housing, health care, food stamps, etc. etc.

Just paid people that money directly. It's more efficient. Less bureaucracy.

They did this is 2 different rooms, an empty office, their own bedroom.

water  ·  3796 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What is everyone's opinion on ebooks? Do you prefer them to physical paper books?

pretty much exactly how I feel. Unless I could have like a nice lofted vertical room with high shelves filled with books in addition to one of those little ladders that slides down the wall, a fireplace, a comfy chair, and a plastic pipe that has bubbles.

then. then thenewgreen, I would enshrine my books for ever!

I'm so happy we follow each other this is the best share ever. Thank you b_b you wonderful magnificent human.

edit So I got to listen! I really like your pedal it sounds really fat and punchy.

I want to record something to play along with this. I'll share it when it's done... Although I might rec. hate it, and then be too shy to share, so that's a possibility too.

I have an iPhone 5s and I can't pull this up :/

I'll definitely listen to this when I get home. Thank you for tagging me!

When you record are you plugging in DI? Or are using a mic setup?

Cheers!

PS when you look for tracks to add to this, is there any editing I can do to make it easier for you to utilize?

Straw bale homes?

water  ·  3803 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Tiny Houses

Yes! Less house=bigger garden.

Maybe raise bees, have an edible landscape, keep minimal livestock for fresh eggs and cream... Ah that to me would be perfect haha

This is great advice. also studying the major cities, what there main industries are for work, their culture

water  ·  3805 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Lil's Book of Questions: How Many Times Do I Have to Apologize?

For me, there are some cases though where I need an apology, not like want, or think it would fair, but need because if it's not said, the relationship suffers. Also this point is a sort of crossroads, because if someone is so adamant about not apologizing, are they really taking my feelings into account? If they aren't taking my feelings into account, why are we anything beyond amicable acquaintances?

how difficult it is for most people to apologize, and the fact that these sorts of apologies require an amount of self-reflection that is difficult a lot of the time.

My ex-boyfriend was like this.

You summed this up perfectly.

water  ·  3805 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Lil's Book of Questions: How Many Times Do I Have to Apologize?

I think that when an apology is not promptly offered, especially for an egregious mistake, it's very telling.

It really is, that to me is a red flag on anyone... whether romantic, friendly, professional, acquaintance....

At that point I have acknowledged the other person's ruffled feathers and it's about "where do we go from here," if it's a person I even want to have that conversation with.

and the "where do we go from here" conversation is one that works only if both people are willing to let go of any negative feelings they had about a situation and heal things. Mutual humility is favorable in the pursuit of resolution and concord between contentious parties.

Going beyond just recognizing someone's ruffled feathers, discerning how our own actions were unskillful in that they put as odds with another: If we can discern that, then apologizing becomes genuine, and we benefit as well as the other. We apologize healing each of us benefitting us in the now and then seeing how our actions were the cause of previous conflict, we can abandon those actions so it doesn't happen again–that benefits ourselves in the longterm. Of course in the case where we did have good discernment and saw that our actions were not the cause of someone's contentiousness, then there is nothing we can do.

Thank you for responding theadvancedapes!

I understand your proposed term much better now, atechnogensis. I really appreciate the effort to refine the idea behind a singularity. I wonder though, how we should understand the concept of an "event"? Both terms, singularity and atechnogensis describe an event. What if the "event" occurs over a period of time, something that is gradual rather than something that occurs in a clear moment? I also find interesting the idea of culture reproduction. How a moment, or process, or both a moment and a process, of cultural reproduction occurs, post the creation of a non-human, intelligent, culture code.

There is almost nothing the human does that is not in some way symbolic. I was going to try and make an argument for biological sex and athletics, but, although both are strongly biological, they are both massively influenced, regulated, and expressed by adaptive cultural activities.

Would there be a case where byproducts, like the waste and pollution of maintaing human population, could be outside of cultural code? Maybe if a portion of the waste and pollution was the result of biological processes(DNA code), another portion culture code, and maybe another portion of it being both.

Anyway, I just really enjoyed what you wrote. Thanks again!

water  ·  3805 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: A Sound You Can't Unhear (And What It Says About Your Brain)

Roughly 80% of the information you think you "see" and "hear" are synthesized by your brain based on, as they say, prior information.

and the brain has a terrible memory at that.

So how much of consciousness is actually real? Our emotions, our passions, our desires... All suspended in delusions, but then reinforced by our sense of "self"...

water  ·  3805 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: When Should We Be Sorry? - NYTimes.com

I'm guilty of this.

"water, stop saying sorry"

"sorry"

"We will not abide businesses that hold hostage on-street public parking spots for their own private profit."

that's definitely an issue.

This was such a great post! theadvancedapes, I like your brain.

Atechnogenesis: an event in cultural evolution when cultural replication can independently occur within a substrate of its own design.

Culture Code: carried in symbols (i.e, A, B, C, D, E, F, G / 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 / + – x % $ ) and structured within language.

I pulled these two definitions because I feel like they are reliant on each other.

Am I correct in my understanding of how the occurrence of atechnogensis would happen:

Humanity would have to create a Culture Code, once humanity created a Culture Code, this Culture Code created by humanity then creates it's own Culture Code. One Culture Code then creates another Culture Code and this called Cultural Evolution. The product of this we would call Atechnogensis?

With Culture Code, is there any human activity that falls outside the scope of culture code?

Thanks, great post!

water  ·  3807 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Sometimes I forget why I'm here

I was told about a week ago that I "complain about this a lot."

Who ever told you that was being incredibly invalidating! It's completely dismissive of your experience and it disregards your feelings instead of empowering you to discuss them.

I'd like to believe that pointing this kind of garbage out means people will start noticing, but who knows.

People will notice and you shouldn't feel bad for doing so and you shouldn't have to question yourself. Talking about these things, raising awareness, is how progress is made. Maybe right now it's on a small scale, but your story has certainly had an impact on me. For every example of progress you observe as the result of your efforts, there are going to be countless others you'll never get the chance to see.
