this is his site, but it gives no indication of what he was in for: http://michaelsantos.com/about/

But 25 years must have meant something serious. He looks like he's been busy since he got out anyway.

eta: nvm, it was non violent drug charges:

A close friend of mine, whom I will call Alex, was involved in the distribution of small amounts of cocaine. Because of my position in my family's firm, I had access to large sums of money. I chose to use some of that money--without my parent's knowledge-to join my friend Alex's scheme by financing a large cocaine purchase. We purchased three kilograms of cocaine for the purposes of reselling them to realize a profit. The transaction lasted about twelve hours, and after replacing the money I had inappropriately taken from my family's firm, Alex and I split a profit of $4O,OOO.

Burgers, pizza, anything trashy and simple and satiating like that.

I just got to the rabbit. How does a ball even move like that? Tell me that.

Surprisingly fascinating.

Very well written too.

I had shrimp and gnocchi for dinner today. Delicious. I love gnocchi, but every attempt to make it myself has been shit.

I got to level 4 in that Winnie the Pooh baseball game in the interim. http://disney.kids.yahoo.co.jp/game/pooh.html

Extremely frustrating though.

notseamus  ·  4339 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Half of all food thrown away

no, I was just really bummed by it when I read the summary earlier on the Guardian.

notseamus  ·  4339 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Half of all food thrown away

I know it's important to know and it's major news, but it just really bums me out and really gets to me.

My mother was telling me that we used to have a vegetable truck that would deliver vegetables to our estate. The owner one day said he had no mushrooms, only old ones, and told him that they were fine and were perfect for mushroom soup or sauce. He had just been throwing the old ones away the whole time. I think if people had better knowledge of how to use what they have and the point where something isn't edible anymore (rather than the really safe supermarket suggested dates), we could save so much.

I actually can't read more than the summary of this, it makes me really furious.

I'm not so extreme in my feelings.

I think they were conned, they're probably not the most critical thinking people in the world, but they didn't deserve it, and I feel really bad for their kids (and all the children affected by this) too.

notseamus  ·  4647 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Harold Camping Admits Sin, Announces End to Doomsday Predictions
Martha Ramos, wife and mother who traveled with her husband and children from North Carolina, said, “We put everything we had into Camping’s organization. We sold our house, quit our jobs and gave away our beloved family pets because we truly believed what Harold Camping was saying. We believed everything he said and spent every single penny to help with the expense of billboards and radio programs. Now we have nothing. We have no home, no job – nothing! And all for a false prophet. This has happened to thousands of families and individuals all over America. We’re heartbroken and really don’t know what to do now.”

At least they didn't kill the pets.

What's the music on that video about?

Also, youtube, fuck off with annotations, they're awful and I hate them.

No surprises there about the iPad, pretty safe predictions, but I don't know if I believe the name change.

I've been examining a science centre for my thesis project this year and I've done research into the outreach that people are doing in order to see how a building would fare wrt attracting visitors. I've been looking at voyeurism and there've been no arguments about letting people look into the world of the scientist and busting that open to examine. Part of the problem is that science isn't casual and has to be rigorous at all times. Bridging the gap between the science and public domains is hard work, and designing a building where the public can come up against the scientific domain is interesting too, also a challenge.

wow, why would anyone agree to that?

>I'm not so concerned about this startup in particular, but with the fact that this idea is entertain-able, and isn't universally revolting, -like selling babies as food.

Yeah, this should have been laughed out of the place, but the fact that someone thinks it's a good idea is insane.

I'd never heard of him before the internet, he's a real american phenomenon unfortunately.

Brian Cox on the BBC does something similar and has energised the public spread of science. There's a rare breed where scientific prowess, the ability to teach others, and being able to connect to the public combine, and they're way more valuable than we imagine.

Amazing article.
I don't have a car so I won't be doing any soon.

What equipment do you have for specialised astrophotography?

haha my perception was way off lol.

I should really click through to these pages though.

Is this yours? It's beautiful.

You're really lucky to have seen the aurora like that, I've been trying to catch it recently with the latest solar flares, but every time it's occurring the weather has been too bad or it hasn't come far enough south.

How was this done?

I'm skeptical of it because it looks like an African landscape but you can see the aurora borealis (unless it's Australian).

Also, I've never seen a shooting star :(
