Try extending an existing thing, rather than starting a project from scratch. It allows one to frame the problem space more in line with the demands.
I too love C, it has been (and will remain for the forseeable) THE Unix service coding language. And if you're having to be creative with Unix/TCP building blocks for a project you'll end up extending an existing daemon which is in C.
