If you search on Amazon, there is lighting that's quite inexpensive, and might be part of what you're looking for. I'm a bit more on the Repo Genetic Opera, Cabaret side of things, though. Anyhow, things I've purchased and used for lighting in my living space, interior design wise, have included:

1) flexible coils of rope lights, in a variety of colors (great to use in showers, and the blue ones look great coiled at the base of a computer workstation setup)

2) lighting kits that... can't find the link, but one lighting type I purchased was a long string of lights, connected to a small box that, when you pressed a button, it'd cycle through different lighting animation patterns, different colors. Worked quite well for edges of rooms.

3) a string of lights encased in crystal shapes (great default lighting for a bathroom)

and

4) this is one I haven't tried, but it was.... I think maybe strip lighting, basically, long strings of led lights that you could assemble into lighting of your choice, or some such.

All of this was quite inexpensive, under $20 each. Also, the local stores are great for getting inexpensive xmas light sets after the holidays. I usually buy in bulk each year. When I have a job, that is.
