I'm sure you've heard all the stories about how Venusians keep knocking out Russian probes. ET doesn't want us poking around. But seriously, I agree that terra-centric views of life are very likely just a prejudice. (But not the forms, imo.)
I see 2 basic requirements that need to be met: 1) body e.g. a 'cohesive' group of mater/energy in a shared temporal reference frame -- galaxies could qualify. 2) metabolism which (in my view) translates to a network of causalities (processing energy as either 'food' or 'information') I wouldn't be surprised if there exist plasma based (in sense of matter state) sentient beings.
