Really been enjoying vampire weekends new album. Been listening to The Beach Boys Pet Sounds. I have become pals with Mike Love from The Beach Boys nephew. I was at his place recently and someone had gifted him a record player. But he didn’t have any records yet. I sent him Pet Sounds and Vampire Weekends, “Modern Vampires..” record. Both are awesome records. Seemed appropriate given his uncle. Going to go see VW in Chicago soon!! Excited
Feel like you know everybody. Never really got into "Modern Vampires"- listened again last week to see if it sparked something new, but alas. The new one, though- I'm with you on that. Totally different songwriting, and the production is just incredible. Had it on repeat.
FotB is a very interesting album. It's so different to what I'd come to expect from VW, but I'm enjoying it. I'm not sure it will ever top Modern Vampires... for me, but then I've had 6 years to get to know that album and I still listen to it regularly. FotB is definitely growing on me.
Interesting. jonaswildman feels the same way as you. I love both albums. I feel like the latest one is almost too sentimental, but it gets saved by its production. It really is incredible. Much of the tools/tricks are perfected on this one that began on modern vampires, imo. Nice to hear from you!
And with Saturday's grand final out of the way, Eurovision season is officially over. Netherlands won. I'm not a fan of the lyrics, but otherwise I like the song, and the performance was great. Sweden won the jury vote. The intro is too long in my opinion, but from the 1 minute mark onwards, I like this. The chorus especially is great. Norway won the televote. I think it's damn catchy, even if the [joiking] is a bit off key. Australia won my heart. Best stage show of the year, by a mile.
I'm hopefully moving out this fall into a place of my own and in to a whole new city so this song feels apt.
Bluetech - Sci-Fi Lullabies. He's been tearing it up lately, 2 albums last year, completing the 4 horsemen project this year and then this. I love this album so far. So warm and lush; feels like a nostalgic homage to the early electronic music built from modular analogue synths but with a more modern perspective mixing broad brushstrokes from IDM and electronica. I've only listened a few times so it remains to see whether it'll hold up to repeated listening but it feels like it will. The commenters on bandcamp seem to favour Darwinia but I think my favourites are Ambergris and Gethen but ahead of them all is that final track Caladan. It evokes one of my favourite electronic tracks ever Hologram - Solstice so strongly for me that it feels like a love letter.
Sierra Ferrell released a new album recently, Washington by the Sea. One of the tags for it is "ragtime" and while it's not out and out ragtime, the jaunty sound is definitely woven into a lot of her songs. I love it.
