I think he touches on the cause when he is talking about journalist own self interest to avoid losing their jobs.

It seems that this comes hand and hand today with consumers demand of instant dissemination of news. It's becoming more common to see constant updates of stories.

What's the solution though? I suppose you could be an organization with great fact checking and a great brand that is known for never publishing falsehoods. Be honest with yourself, when something breaks you're going to click on huffpo, salon, WSJ, AP, whoever just because it's there right away and you want to know.
