I contact them after some discussion has taken place. This way I know that it is a topic that some of us have an interest in. Plus, the author gets to see that their work has sparked some conversation. If I were to write something, I would appreciate knowing that it is being discussed and so far, the reactions from the authors I have contacted have been very positive.
