Really? I thought he was universally loved. Is it that he's too bubblegum for your taste?
I can't say that I share cgod's intensity, but I also am not much of a Tyson fan either. I can't really put my finger on it. I'll have to watch some more clips... But he leaves me with the impression that he is talking down to his audience, and I've never heard a really unique perspective from him.
I suppose that might be it. He seems to have picked up the armchair astrophysicist circuit, but doesn't bring much of a personal voice to the table. Mostly he is just rehashing common knowledge, and making a few jokes along the way. He doesn't strike me as a dreamer, and there are thousands of people with the knowledge he shares. That might be harsh. I'll watch some more.

If there are thousands of people with the knowledge he shares, then I wish they would also find mediums by which to communicate complex ideas in an accessible way. How often have people pined on HUBSKI (and elsewhere) for our citizenry to care more about the sciences and space exPloration in general? I've listened to NDT a number of times and have always found him to portray himself as more of a teacher than an innovator. The guy is super passionate about astrophysics and his passion is infectious. Science needs more of this, not less.

I agree that NDT is a positive force, and a much needed one. But like in this video, his message always seems fragmented and isn't very coherent. He is doing a great thing. I just don't like his style, I suppose.
I guess it's not fair, because I can't help but compare him to Sagan.

Yeah, that really isn't fair. Sagan was great. Funny that cynthianews mentioned his voice, I've always really liked it and actually find it comforting. I guess what this post has proven is that all things, astrophysicists not excluded, are subjective.
