How about it sounds_sound, are all chairs just different grades of suckiness? Curious if you've ever designed a chair... was it a black turtle neck or perhaps a button down?

Nope. Never designed a chair. I think I stayed away from it because they are so ubiquitous in design schools. I'm not an industrial designer though, and if I brought a portfolio to an interview that had a chair in it I don't think I would be taken seriously. In my profession though, we do see a lot of chairs. I'll grab some low hanging fruit here and say that the Eames chair is pretty dope. Charles actually first worked on his design with Eero Saarinen while at Cranbrook - the famous Michigan design school. Charles was only able to manufacture his chair after some serious plywood R&D while making leg splints for the military, which were wildly successful and essentially funded the rest of his career.
I try and stay aware of how long I both sit and stand. I think that we can begin to attack the author's position about being stuck with chairs by examining the height of surfaces that we work on. For me, I made a 40" table for my home that has tall bar stools with it. It's great because I can both sit or stand to type and work without losing productivity either way. I think it also reminds me of being at the pub which has its own kind of comfort...

I have a large bar area in my kitchen that is well lit and just the right height to work at. I'm going to try and work there more moving forward. It must be nice to use something daily that you built, I admire that.
